I have several 1.5.25 websites, and I want to upgrade to 1.7, so that eventually I can then upgrade to the new 2.5.

There is so much information out there about the best way to migrate, and it's all quite conflicting.  I'm terrified of doing this upgrade.

I'm no code writer, so I'm looking for an extension/component which will make the process easy.  I've read about JUpgrade everywhere, but lots of good and bad reviews.

Can anyone help with a simple as possible solution to migration?  I'm using the eshopper template with virtuemart on some sites, and the photofolio on others.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   Smiley

Hello,

Currently Jupgrade is the only component to do this. Please note that eshopper has not yet been fully tested with VM 2.0, which is the only version compatible with 1.7.

Jupgrade will transfer over your content, but most third party extensions and templates will need to be re-installed after you the conversion is done.

Mike, it is better for me to stay on 1.5.25 for the time being then?  I'm only upgrading because I feel I have to, but if it's not critical then I'd rather leave things as they are.

Hello,

You can stay on 1.5, but just keep in mind that Joomla will not be supporting it anymore as of April. You will also not be receiving any updates such as security issues.

You say that eshopper hasn't been fully tested with VM2.0, does that mean it doesn't work at all?  What are my options in that case?  Do I have to change templates?

The template should work fine but we haven't converted any of our VM modules to the new version of VM

Thanks. Please let us know once you have upgraded to VM2.0 and your findings on this.

I'll try if we can set it up on our end too.

Hi Jonah
I am also thinking of upgrading my 1.5 sites to 2.5 - it would seem that the best course is 1.5 -> 1.7 and then the upgrade in 1.7 to 2.5.
Do I need to upgrade the Shape 5 templates - or will they be OK?
Do I need to upgrade the Shape 5 modules?

Thanks

Hello,

You would go right from 1.5 to 2.5, no need for 1.7. Please see my previous post about re-installing modules and templates:

Jupgrade will transfer over your content, but most third party extensions and templates will need to be re-installed after you the conversion is done.

Thanks
Just to confirm - This is what I am going to do:

I am going to use SP upgrade to upgrade to 2.5 -
My first site is using the Elegance template - and is version 1.5.14 (I do not use Jomsocial or Kunene)
Once I have done the upgrade - must I download the 2.5 template for Elegance and re-install it as a template? Or will the 2.5 update work on the old template?
Must I manually go through all the modules to upgrade them?

Sorry for asking questions you may have answered before - I just want to make totally sure that I have it all right.
Thanks

Hello,

Yes, everything must be re-installed including the template and the modules. Joomla changed the xml integration in 1.7 so no 1.5 files will work with 1.7 or higher.

Newbe here - my host (justhost.com) is upgrading to J2.5 in March and my eshopper was built in J1.5. If my 1.5 files wont work in 2.5 then I'm confused, is there another process to follow other that template, modules and third party extensions re-install? Which for a new comer to Joomla is rather daunting in itself!

Hello,

That template has not been converted yet, nor it's modules. Virtuemart 2.0 was just released a few weeks ago and require a complete overhual. They are currently being re-done, but will take some time to complete.

Your host though, shouldn't force you to upgrade your Joomla install. 1.5 is still a stable platform.
