How do you make it so that when you click on an article from the home page or another sub-page, you get just the article without all of the modules surrounding it?  It looks so cluttered, it's hard to find the article you clicked on!  Is there a setting for this?

Make sure the modules aren't set to show on all pages, make sure you only publish the modules showing to the menu items you want them to appear on.

The modules are set to appear on the home page b/c they need to be on the home page.   But the article appears on the home page, too, and when you click on it, you get all the mess around it and it is distracting.

There is a way to make it so that just the clean-looking article shows, but I don't know what it is.  Our current site was set up that way, and I can't figure out how it works:  http://www.nnpstv.com/ .  If you click on one of the stories in the rotator up top, or one of the news articles, you get JUST the article; no modules.

How do I set the modules to appear on the homepage, but not on the stories that are in the News category that display on the homepage?

We are using 1.6 for our new site -- the old one is 1.5.

Thanks!

Joomla works all on menu items when concerning modules, so each module has 2 scenarios:

1. It can be publish to every page on your site, so matter what the menu item, it will show
2. It can be published to only certain pages.  To do this you must open each module and assign them to the menu items you desire.

The second scenario sounds like where you are at.  You would need to open each module that is showing on the page you don't' want it to show and publish these modules only to the home menu item.  In the admin area of each module.

The modules ARE published ONLY to the HOME page.  Did you look at our current site?  http://www.nnpstv.com

As an example, there is a red module on the right that says "Live Webcast."  It is set to appear on the Home page.  If you click on this article:  Live coverage: School Board meetings and work sessions, URL below

http://www.nnpstv.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=69:school-board-meeting&catid=22:news-worthy

you will not see the red promo on the right.  This is how I want it.

Conversely, if you go to our new site:  http://206.246.197.40/

you will see "Program Highlights" at the top right, and if you click on a story, like "Telecom part of tech leadership tour"

http://206.246.197.40/index.php/119-nsba-tln-sitetour2011

you WILL see the "Program Highlights" and I want it to go away!  I want the modules only on the home page, not on the articles.

Do I have to do something to the News category to make it think it is not on the Homepage or something?  I can't figure out how it was set up for our current site...

I solved this issue by making a separate News page.  I made a Menu Item called News with a Menu Item Type of Category Blog.  I put it in the Home menu and now all the stories on the home page click thru' to plain articles w/out all the modules! Which is perfect!

So basically it just has to exist in a menu somewhere in order to appear without all the surrounding modules.  I'm not sure how to do it so that it is not live on the site, but I think there is a way for it to be hidden.  You control what modules show up by setting them when you edit each module.  So you can set some modules to show on "Home" and other things to show on "News."  And it will be the same whether you click on the article from Home or from News if the article is in the News category.

I always thought the articles were part of Home and there wasn't a way around it.

You do NOT have to create a menu item for each article if you use the category blog setting and give your stories a category.

So now when you click on a story from my homepage it goes to:

http://206.246.197.40/index.php/home/news-page/119-nsba-tln-sitetour2011

instead of

http://206.246.197.40/index.php/119-nsba-tln-sitetour2011

which makes all the difference!

Hope this helps someone else...  I really didn't want to make a menu item or a module for every article!
