Hi. General question.

In the Global config/Tools, I checked permissions and many, if not all folders, were "unwritable". I had no upload problems installing modules/plugins from within the Joomla "install" function. However, when turning some plugins/modules on and trying to configure, I got "write" errors. I started changing permissions for the affected folders - first 077, then 777, sometimes resolving problems, sometimes not.

I think my permissions are a mess now. What do I do now??? Should I reset everything to 755? What should configuration.php be?

The site displays fine, however, however I can't do much with the modules I need. (No S5 modules have problems that I know of.)

I did not install joomla on the server. It was a default install, 1.5, and a privately hosted commercial server.

Big mess. Any thoughts helpful.

Thank you.

Hello,

In your modules and templates folders you should set everything to 644 to be the most secure.  If this causes errors or certain modules to stop working then 755 those only.

Configuration.php should also be 644

Thanks much Jonah.

Most permissions problems are with gallery solutions, and they are a PITA, and some need 777 to write to their component folders. :>)

Your suggestions got me back to normal.
