I had either a flash of inspiration or a flash of ignorance --

I love the Site Shapers.  As I wrote in another post, I'm in the midst of migrating a bunch of sites from J1.x to J1.5.x -- and the migration scripts overwrite Site Shapers, as I learned from Jonahh.

Even though it's convoluted, could this work as a way to have the best of both, so to speak?

1.  Migrate the J1.x site (let's call it Site A) to J1.5.x using the migration tools, creating Site B.
2.  Create an SQL dump of the content, sections, categories, and users from Site B.
3.  Install a Site Shaper at Site C.
4.  Overwrite Site C's (sample data) content, sections, categories, and users with the Site B SQL dump.

Would leave the template and modules intact as installed by the Site Shaper?

If there's a better way, I'd be grateful for suggestions!

Yes I believe this should work, just overwriting those 4 areas should not effect the layout.  I haven't tested this but if you do take this route be sure to have backups to revert to especially if you are doing this on a live site.
