: Site Shapers & GoDaddy
: adillard April 15, 2011, 08:45:56 AM
GoDaddy will be hosting my website. I want to use the Life Journey Site Shaper. GoDaddy gives the option of installing Joomla 1.6.1 and setting up the database. Should I  install Joomla with GoDaddy, then install the Site Shaper or simply install Site Shaper? If simply Site Shaper, do I first have to create the database or is that part of the Site Shaper? Is Joomla 1.6.1 or 1.6 part of Site Shaper?

Hello,

Site shapers need to be installed into a blank folder and empty database, they cannot be installed into a pre-existing installation, which is what the Godaddy installation would be doing. Please see the following tutorial for setting up a site shaper:

http://www.shape5.com/demo/life_journey/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=39&Itemid=89

Please also keep in mind that only the template for life journey is compatible with 1.6, there is no site shaper for 1.6 available at this time.

On another note, if you still have the option I would highly recommend not using Godaddy as your host and look into a host such as siteground.com. Godaddy's backend lacks some very simple functions and does not give full cpanel access. I trouble shoot a lot of sites and have run into issues with Godaddy a lot unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip. The latest blog on Joomla 1.6 from Shape 5 is a Jan date... so there are no 1.6 Site Shapers available?

Did you get word back on an available update?

Hello,

That blog post is still up to date and is linked on the right side of every page on our site. It is being continually updated as new themes are converted.

Mikek, can you give me any specifics on issues with GoDaddy hosting or their cpanel? I have not initiated my hosting so they are willing to cancel it... I am a true novice at website building. I really appreciate the heads up and want to go with the easiest host to use, but my only concern is GoDaddy offers the ability to host more than one domain included in price which is much cheaper for my needs.

Hello,

Godaddy does not give you access to Cpanel Accelerated, which most hosts do provide. The biggest limitations to their cpanel are file navigation and there is no extraction option of files. We recommend when installing a site shaper that you use the extraction option directly on the server rather than uploading files to make sure all file permissions are kept in tact.

Read your advice on using SiteGround over GoDaddy. From what I read, Siteground does not support Java. Will that affect using the
Game Crusade template, or any 3rd party extensions to run photo galleries, music players, video players, etc?

Also, being kind of new to Joomla, do very many extensions actually require java to run on a joomla site?

thank you

Nevermind.  someone sent me an email stating Siteground does indeed  now support javascript.

Thank you.
