: Abbreviate Home Page Posts

Tristan,

Most of my posts are lengthy out of necessity. As a result, my home page can be longer than I would like it to be. I've done some self research, but I can't find a good way to abbreviate the post and inject a "read more" at the end of the abbreviation. The read more link would then open the full post page. I know this can be done, as I have seen it on other WP sites, but how?

Thank you!

The easiest way is to add a "--more--" into the body of the post wherever you would like the cutoff to be.  Wordpress will automatically turn that into a cutoff point.  You could also use the "excerpt" area to write a custom excerpt for each post (if it's not showing on the "Write Post" screen, click the "Screen Options" tab in the top right and check the box next to "excerpt".

You may also have to change the site "reading" settings (under "Settings" in the admin) to show excerpts rather than full posts.  On that screen you can also set a limit to the number of posts on the home page.
