: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp March 30, 2013, 12:07:27 PM
Hi,
When a new user tries to login or register a message saying
"Publish a login form or anything you want to this position"

And does not give the user an option login or register.

How do I fix that?
Thanks,
John

The login/logout and register positions are widget positions.  You can name the links anything you want through the theme admin, but if you want to change their content, just change whatever widget(s) are in those positions.

If you just want to disable the login and register links, just clear out the text from the related boxes in the theme admin.

How do I find out which widgets are installed on Siena. I'm running siteshaper version.
When I click on widgets admin, from the appearance menu, it tells me to drag and place widgets to activate them.

I would love to see the layout of the demo, all the widgets that are currently installed where, and just go in and edit them appropriately.

Is that possible?

Theme Options admin page does not allow that, only modes on changing the specs of the modules.

Thanks,
John

It sounds like you are new to WP.

The widgets from the shaper are exactly the same as the widgets from the demo, just scroll down until you see the login/register positions, and expand them; that's the positions you'll need to change.  Just expand the other sections to see what other widgets are in those positions.

To get rid of the Login/Logout/Register text, you need to go to the bottom of the "general" tab in the theme options.

Ok I see the scroll part now and which modules are installed where. I appreciate the direction.

Now I don't see the row corresponding for the login info, i.e. the row where they're at. I'm assuming that that they would be in Rows 1 or 2.

Yes I am new to WP and of course Shape5 and I greatly appreciate your help and guidance, but am computer/web savvy.

I am very close to learning your Shape5 concept and how it deals with WP.

Thanks for your patience,
John

I've dragged the Meta widget to the row location to hopefully activate the login register, but still get this message from the site when clicked on.
Publish a login form or anything you want to this position.

Could you please let me know the necessary (additional/different) steps to get the login and register to work properly.

Thanks,
John

The login and register positions are near the bottom of the sidebar list.  If you are not getting the results you want, you are most likely not using the correct position.

To see the location and name of each position and how it relates to your site, add "?tp=2" to the URL for your site when you view it in your browser.  I added that feature as a way for people to see exactly where they want to place widgets.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 02, 2013, 01:29:28 PM
That's a great addition/help tool. I thought it would be at the top not the bottom, since that's where it's posted on theme.

So I would put the "?tp=2" at the end

blogs.smarteresting.com/"?tp=2"

blogs.smarteresting"?tp=2".com

Thanks,
John

For some reason, the login register is the only spot NOT showing a location marker. :)

blogs.smarteresting.com/"?tp=2"

Again great little addition.

Thanks,

And is it because it's not installed?

Can I then place the Meta in a bottom spot that's empty?

Is there a particular row number where it is or should be for the Siena demo/siteshaper?

Am I right assuming that the Meta widget is the right one for the login/register?

Thanks,
John

http://blogs.smarteresting.com/?tp=2

The reason login/register aren't showing an indicator is because they're created by the S5Box plugin, and not the theme.  It's installed, or it wouldn't be working.  The fact that it's created by a plugin is also why the positions are at the bottom of the list in the widget admin.

The meta widget could work, but I would suggest looking for an actual login/register form plugin.  I believe there's one called "jQuery login" or something like that; but I can't guarantee it wouldn't have any script conflicts.

Either way I'll try to be as helpful as I can, but you should really try to find some good tutorials on managing WordPress widgets.  You may also want to look for a tutorial about Widget Context, as that's the plugin that allows customizing which widgets are visible on specific pages/posts.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 02, 2013, 02:25:37 PM
But that's a Major part of the theme - allowing people to login and register is Major!
Having to go look elsewhere for a plugin with no guarantee that it will work is Not good.

I don't think learning Wordpress which I'm finding to be very simple is the issue has anything to do with the login/register not working.

I appreciate your help and assistance, but I don't think I should be looking elsewhere for an integral part of theme to work.

I signed up because I was impressed with the theme and still am, but I don't think this is right.
Do you?

John

The Login/Register buttons function exactly as intended - they show whatever widget is placed in the corresponding sidebar positions that are created by the S5 Box plugin.  Learning WordPress is important because over 90% of the content areas in most Shape 5 themes are widget areas, and knowing not only how to properly manage widgets but also how to use Widget Context (which is currently the only way you'll be able to set specific widgets to be only visible on certain pages) is extremely important to being able to use the theme to its fullest ability.  Having difficulty placing a widget in the "Login" sidebar position suggests that you may need a better understanding of widget management.

While the text of the login/register buttons is defined in the theme options, the buttons cannot function without the S5 Box plugin; they are far from being a major part of the theme - they are just a bonus integration with that plugin.  The ability of visitors to the site to login/register isn't even a major part of WordPress; WP has never been a "community-based" system; it is primarily designed to have a single user or small group of users who provide content for the site visitors.  If the site is meant to be a blog, why would you even want people to log in?  Allowing new user registrations opens up your site to spammers, and doesn't really improve your site capabilities in any way.

The thing I wouldn't be able to guarantee is the script compatibility of a jQuery login form.  Some jQuery based plugins cause conflicts with the mootools-based scripts in the theme and some of the Shape 5 plugins.  This plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tabbed-login/) appears to have been updated recently, and may provide the capability you want.

Hopefully that helps.

As you know the intended function of a login and register button is to let people login and register!

How the theme handles its implementation, how it works or my knowledge of Wordpress  is a different topic.

I want people to login and register because they will have different functions, like Wordpress allows, exp. some will be editors others plain subscribers, etc.

Telling me that I should Not want a feature that's a basic and necessary function because it's not working in the theme does not solve the problem.

I want a login and register feature that works like a login and register feature. As mentioned earlier, I should not have to hunt for plugins to make this basic function work.

I picked your service over others and paid in good faith believing all features will work, if you can not guarantee and can not make the login register feature work as it should, I am thereforerequesting  a refund.

I appreciate that you in turn in good faith and in good business practice accommodate appropriately.

Thanks,
John

Here are links to a myriad of WordPress blogs
and they all have one thing in common - working login and register buttons.

: Re: New Users Login and Register

I'm not telling you not to want it, I was just saying that if it's not necessary, then it's better to not use it; obviously in your case, you feel it is necessary, and I will do everything I can to help you achieve that goal.

Thanks for the examples.  I don't create the designs, I only reprogram them to function on WordPress; some things don't carry over well from the Joomla originals, so I can see the frustration.  Joomla has a built in capability to display a login and/or registration form; WordPress does not.    I was trying to make things easier on you by suggesting that you have a widget which contains the login form, rather than redirecting the user to another page.  If all you want is a link that goes to the standard WP login, that's easily possible; the meta widget can perform that task nicely - just place it in the Login position, and it will appear when someone clicks the Login button.

If you prefer to just have the login button directly take the user to the WP login page, I can easily make that happen as well; I may just have to give you some code to swap.  Those buttons really aren't dedicated to login/logout/register - they're just an optional widget area for lyteboxed content, but if you want them to be, it won't be difficult.

Thank you and I appreciate you making this happen.

What I need is for the theme to allow people to subscribe to Wordpress and then I can go into Wordpress user editor and upgrade and manage their membership accordingly.

I am looking for the option that's the most stable and compatible.
Which of the two you suggest do you think will work best with Siena?

Again thank you for your help,
John

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 03, 2013, 10:14:00 AM
The easiest solution would probably be to place the meta widget in the "login" position and change the text to "Login or Register" for that button while removing the text for the "Register" button.  Then, when they click the new "Login or Register" button, it will show the meta widget, and they'll be able to click the necessary links to do what they want.

If that doesn't quite look right, then I would replace the meta widget with the tabbed login/register widget from the plugin I suggested earlier.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 03, 2013, 10:28:45 AM
Which row should I drag the meta widget to, to make this happen and see what it looks like?

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 03, 2013, 10:39:34 AM
Not "Row".  It will need to go in the "Login" position, which is near the bottom of the widget admin area.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 03, 2013, 11:00:16 AM
I do not see a login position at the the bottom of the page.
A bunch of rows to the right
and blank white section to the left.

I tried to insert a screen capture of the widget admin page but could not.

Can I email you my admin login info?

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 03, 2013, 11:05:30 AM
You can PM admin info through the forum.  Thanks for asking first.

I may have to wait till tomorrow to look at it though; I'm trying to wrap up the programming on the release for this month because I need to get started on the framework rewrite I want to do before next month can release.

I just did  but forgot to include a subject title.

: Re: New Users Login and Register

Thanks for sending the information so quickly - the meta widget has been moved down to the "S5Box - Login" position, the text widget that was in that position has been hidden, and the text for the login/register links has been changed to make it a single link.

Take a look to see what you think, then try the plugin I suggested and see if that is more what you'd like.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 04, 2013, 07:06:40 AM
Great - I thought you were going to look at it today.
I see what you mean. It works but the look is not going to cut it.
I'm going to look for the login plugin and see how it works and looks.

If I run into problems installing I will let you know.

Thanks again for your support,
John

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 04, 2013, 07:28:43 AM
I was, but you got the info to me fast enough that I figured it would be better to just get it done.  I think that tabbed login widget should work well for you, but we can't know until you add it.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 04, 2013, 10:41:41 AM
Thanks  - I also found this one.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-sliding-login-register-panel/installation/

Can two plugins performing the "same task" be installed at the same time in the plugins directory?

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 05, 2013, 08:40:40 AM
As long as the plugin authors didn't name any of their functions exactly the same, there shouldn't be any conflicts.  The only way to know is try it.  If there's a problem, you'll get an error message when you try to activate the plugin and WP won't let it activate.

Hi,
I just took out the Meta in the S5 box and uploaded the plugin by clicking the delete box.

plugin Not working.

Should I have left the meta there?
Are there any other steps needed to delete the meta in the S5 box?

Thanks,
John

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 05, 2013, 10:06:13 AM
Did you activate the plugin and place the new widget in the correct sidebar?  If so, make sure the widget context settings are allowing the new widget to be visible on all pages.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 05, 2013, 10:08:08 AM
the page still says login/register  like for the meta. maybe I didn't delete it all the way?
or should not have deleted?

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: Tristan Rineer April 05, 2013, 10:10:25 AM
That text is defined on the "General" tab of the theme options area.  It has nothing to do with the widget other than being the link that loads the "S5 Box - Login" sidebar contents.  You don't currently have anything placed in that sidebar, but if you want to remove the text, you need to do it through the theme options.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 05, 2013, 11:17:18 AM
It was a pretty much an easy straight forward installation.
Plugin admin says it's activated.

I'm going to try the other one and see if it works.

: Re: New Users Login and Register
: johnwp April 05, 2013, 11:47:48 AM
I just uploaded the second one.
Could you please take a look for me and see what might be going on.
It's in the widget admin.
Thanks,
John

Have you placed it in the correct sidebar?  From the front end of your site, it doesn't appear that you have.
