Hi,
There are two upload instructions:
1)The site
download and FTP...

2) Template
Download package and upload through Joomla backend (component install)
http://www.shape5.com/demo/index.php?newsplace

Which one is best and should I use?

Hello John,

1. This method is for a site shaper (complete Joomla package with template and demo content included) install.  This is the only way you can do a site shaper install.

2.  This second method is for a template install only and also can only be done via this method.  This route would assume you already have Joomla on your server and you just want the template installed, with no demo content, modules, etc

I uploaded Newsplace from Joomla backend.
1) A message stating that it needs PHP 3.1 or higher
2) I switched to the higher version
3) and now the site www.smarteresting.com gives this error message:
500 - JHtmlBehavior: :mootools not supported.
4) The backend side smarteresting.com/administrator/index.php gives this eror:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method JHtml::getJSObject() in /home/content/26/9081326/html/libraries/cms/html/bootstrap.php on line 390

4) Host ( Godaddy) suggested that I restore the site to before I uploaded Newsplace, when everything was working fine.
But still no access.

Why would upload a template totally screw things up?
what did I do wrong?
How do I fix it?

Hey John,

It sounds like you are using Joomla. 2.5 template or module on a Joomla 3.0 site.  As for the bootstrap error you need to contact godaddy for this.  This is a Joomla error and most likely relates to godaddy server.  I really recommend leaving godaddy and going to a host such as siteground.com as Joomla will work fine on it.  We've had many users have issues with godaddy actually.

Hi Jonah,
I had been running New Vision without any problems until I decided to install newvision from the backend of Joomla.
And then all hell broke loose.
I didn't get a chance to activate newvision when everything crashed.

I was under the impression that both newsplace and newvision were Joomla 3.1 compatible. No?

Should a site restore take care of the problem, going back before I installed newsplace?

Hey John,

Not sure why site would crash but be sure you installed the 3.0 version its labeled as "current" in the downloads.   For a site restore I guess try that.  Ive never done that so not sure but try it also you could probably contact your host and have them restore to an earlier date backup like hours before you did this upload

It turned out to be the opposite. I was using a 3.0 template on a 2.5 site. Godaddy is not yet running Joomla 3.0.

Is the 2.5  Newsplace the exact same thing as the joomla 3.0 version?
Would there be a patch to migrate from to 2.5 to 3.0, if 2.5 is installed?

Also - should each new template be in it's own database?
And if yes, does that mean the templates should not be installed from Joomla's backend extension installer, for it defaults to the installed database of the current in use  template?

Yes both templates are the same only difference is features in Joomla 2.5 and 3.0 that differ. 

The template section of Joomla is included in Joomla database so you don't have to worry about anything database related
