: Editing CSS files vs creating child theme
: segovia October 23, 2013, 08:47:31 PM
I've noticed some conversations in this forum that suggested editing a Shape5 CSS file in order to solve a particular problem.

I've also been reading discussions on various WordPress forums about creating a child theme in order to customize a 3rd party theme in a safe manner.

What is the official Shape5 position on this subject? Do you advocate directly editing theme CSS files or do you recommend creating a child theme instead?

The complexity of these themes makes it very difficult to properly implement support for child themes; since the framework for the releases beginning with Paradigm Shift and onward can easily be updated without interfering with user-made changes to CSS, child theme support isn't a planned addition.  There is, however, a plan to add detection of a user-controlled CSS overrides file that will not get overwritten, even in the case of a full theme replacement, because it will be auto-generated after install, and only if it doesn't already exist.
