: Update from Vertex 3.5 to Vertex 3.6
: Annepal September 18, 2014, 03:54:17 PM
Hi there,
I have read the pdf-file on the subject, downloaded the patch to my computer and found the right place to upload the files to my Joomla backend.
Should I upload the files one by one? Or is it possibly to upload a zip-file of the patch?
I tried to upload one by one, but I get the error message that a file with that name already exists ..
Then I created a folder named "shape5_vertex3_patch" and started to upload a couple of files, but I don't think that is correct either.
Could you give me a hint of what I should do?
Best regards, Annepal

Hello,

You should be able to upload and overwrite the files via FTP/File Manager with the new ones from the patch. If you are getting that message it should give you an option to overwrite, if not then just delete the file and re-upload it to the server. Also, please make a backup before doing any of this just in case something goes wrong.

Also note that you can completely remove and reinstall the Template that is pre-packaged with the latest version if that is easier. Just remember your Vertex backend settings.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried several times and I just get the error message (the file already exists) and no option to overwrite.

I then proceeded with the delete & upload new version of file .. Did it for the component.php and error.php - and suddenly kind of realized how many files we were talking about (775 I think!)! I'm a bit scared of forgetting one on the road .. It's just not possibly to do it that way - unless I have misunderstood something which is very likely!

Is it potentially source of error that I now have a new version of the component.php and error.php, but the rest is the old versions?

What happens if I do not upgrade to Vertex 3.6 at all? Any security issues? A time in the future where it doesn't work any more with new versions of Joomla?

I'm not too found of the "delete whole template + upload new"-solution - with my multilingual website, changes in backend Vertex and my limited skills ..

Any words of consolation?

Hello,

There are really only 2 ways to update Vertex

a) Downloading the patch and ovewriting all the files via FTP/File Manager. If your server isn't letting you overwrite files that is something you would want to take up with your web host as your permissions are most likely set improperly.

b) Deleting and reinstalling the Template which will have the latest Vertex Version. This is sometimes easier for people and if you take screenshots of each Vertex Configuration page it shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes to input all the former settings you were using.
