: How to customise template
: adgilcan October 24, 2014, 06:33:35 AM
Hi

I have finally managed to get my site shaper template installed along with sample data.  The site is not intuitive for me and I am wondering how to go about customising it to my own requirements.  There doesn't seem to be any comprehensive documentation beyond how to install it.  I understand that it uses the Vertex engine.  Should I be looking at the Vertex website for information?

Joomlashine documentation is excellent.  Is there something similar for Shape5?

Thanks

Hello,

We have a lot of documentation here for understanding how to use the feature of Vertex:

http://www.shape5.com/documentation/

We don't have docs on customizing/modifying the site though. Our documentation is on how to use the functions in the framework.

Thanks Mike

I am trying to watch the Joomlashine tutorials and adapt them to Shape5.

Just as a generic workflow, though, am I looking to replace the modules in the sample site with my own stuff and how do I do that?  I am having a great deal of difficulty identifying the items I want to alter/ delete/ move.  Just to get me started, could you explain how in "find" the relevant modules or articles in the administration area of the site.

Thanks

I've spent the last 16 hours trying to work out how to get rid of the "login" & "register" links at the top right of the hexicon page.

There simply must be a quick way of identifying them but I am at a loss as to how to do it.  I have tried to identify by "inspecting the elements" and also by unpublishing everything that could possibly be related but, apart from noticing that they disappear when I unpublish the entire "Main Menu" I cannot locate then.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE could someone give me a steer.  Not only for this but also how to manipulate the entire sample data site to make it one's own.

The documentation for these templates is awful.  I'm sure they are incredibly clever, but only if you are an expert to begin with.

I'm off to bed with a headache!

Thanks all

D

Hello,

1) To find relevant articles/modules I would suggest using a couple tools:

a) Generally the Title of the module will match the module/article name in the module manager

b) If a module has no title or heading and you aren't sure of its location you can use a tool called Firebug to tell you where it is located. Then you can just look for that position specifically in the module list.

http://www.shape5.com/documentation/Miscellaneous/How-To-Use-Firebug

2) To get rid of the Login/Register links you just need to leave the input fields in the Template Manager blank for Login/Logout/Register and they won't appear. These are located under the General Tab in the Vertex back end. Also be sure to search the forums as this question gets asked quite a bit so it might save you time in waiting for a response

3) If you are still unsure of where a certain element is located you can post a URL and accompany an image highlighting the module you are trying to identify.

Thanks Mike

Good advice, thank you.  I shall try again today.

Regarding searching the forum, I understand your frustration.  It must be tedious to respond to the same question time and again.  I did have a look through because I, too, thought that this topic must have come up before but I didn't find anything relevant.  Perhaps I should have looked harder.

Anyway, thanks for the input.  Maybe you could consider making a video tutorial on basic template manipulation? (Like you haven't got anything else to do ;) ), although I notice that your firebug tutorial takes a good stab at it.

Hello,

I will consider making a tutorial in the future for Template Manipulation. I would also highly suggest you take advantage of the 7 day free trial over at

If you end up needing more than 7 days we have a 50% off coupon in our Member Bonus section here:

http://www.shape5.com/promotions/member_bonuses/

It will teach you everything you need to know about Joomla, Template Manipulation/Creating and Web Design in general. As always if you have any questions you can always ask here as well.

Very good advice.

How do you rate Lynda.com?

Hello,

I have personally not used or checked any content on that site so I am not sure. I have read through quite a bit of content on ostraining though and it is always pretty straightforward for any experience level.
