: 404 Error page when using Administrator interface
: MurrayG May 08, 2015, 10:51:23 PM
If I open the index.php file (for example) and then close without editing I get redirected out of the Administrator interface and to the Site 404 error page.
It also happens if I try to create a custom html module.
Why?
How to fix?

Thanks
Murray

Update:

I created a new database and imported a known good backup (few months old) having first made a text copy of everything I could since the date of that backup.  Re-did all the changes since the backup from the text files and rebuilt the menus.  Site is now back as it should be and all edits from Module Manager now work, I even rebuilt the menu item that was making the site go blank and it works without issues.

However, if I open index.php in Template Manager > Customise Template and close it again (no edits) I now no longer get a 404 page, I just get a blank page.. View source shows nothing at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Murray

I guess it is not the end of the world as I can always edit index.php in cPanel - should I ever need to.

Hello,

You shouldn't be editing files via the Joomla Backend as it can cause a bunch of corruption issues during writes if server timeouts occur during the process. I would use SFTP and Filezilla for moving/modifiying files to the server.
