I have found where to add a background color to the floating menu, but the main menu on the home page has a transparent background. How can configure with a black background like on the demo? I have attached a screenshot.

You need to add an image URL to the "background image 1" area here in the Vertex admin area under Theme Specific:

http://www.shape5.com/demo/big_picture/images/template_specific.png

I also have a problem where sub-menu items will not display.

I'm not sure why this would be happening without taking a first hand look at your site but it appears you are on localhost.  I would try disabling all 3rd party non-Shape5 extensions to be sure nothing is conflicting with the menu.

I have fixed other issues but I still can't seem to get a background on my menu, except on the Home page. I have added the image where I can in the template configuration but nothing seems to work, unless I publish to custom_1 module, but I really do not want to do that.

Another issue is that on every submenu page, there is no image for the background like on the home page or any other top menu item. I work a lot in different templates, but this one is driving me crazy.

Any help would be appreciated.

Be sure you enter in a full site URL also can you post a URL where this occurs?

I installed locally, then I tried it on my dedi which is above. I installed the site shaper and made no changes, this is what I get.

Taking a look the reason is because you need a full site URL.  You have:


So on your sub pages its actually adding in the whole url here:


This is why the image isn't showing. Just enter in your full URL which would look like:
