: Site not displaying
: billyb March 23, 2016, 05:59:55 AM
I simply added pages to my site, about 30, put them in the menu, and boom, my site stopped working.  I disabled all the plugins to see if it was a plugin issue, nothing.  I changed themes to a wordpress generic and that worked, so it leads me to believe there is something in the theme that I must have messed up when adding these pages.  Any ideas?

Can you provide a link to your site so I can see what's happening?

Sure thing.  http://s1091453.instanturl.net/dev.wgagolf.com/

Odd thing is the back end is running incredibly slow as well.

Thanks!

Could you try switching back to a default theme and re-saving the menu?  That should remove any extra settings added by the Flex menu system, just in case something in the menu itself is causing the problem.

Your site is actually timing out for me, even when I try to go to the login page, so it seems that either something is slowing the server down or the connection for the server is having issues.

I deleted the menu that I added thinking that was the source of the issue.  I did that yesterday.  As soon as I select a new theme everything runs perfectly.  I'm guessing I need to reinstall the theme?

Did you install the site using a Shaper, or just upload the theme to an existing WP installation?  If you uploaded through FTP, it's possible that your FTP client corrupted some of the files.  The best way to make sure that doesn't happen is to set the FTP client to use "Binary Mode" for transfers.

I installed using the shaper and it's been working for the past 2 months.  I'm going to re-upload the theme to try that out.  I've never done that before, however, do you suggest any particular files or folders that I should copy before I'm forced to redo all the work currently done?

If it has been working fine for a couple months, then it's not likely that it's a corrupted file.  Does the problem only happen when you have that specific menu assigned?  It could be that the size of the menu is causing problems.

Well, I just deleted the theme folder under content and uploaded a new copy of the theme folder.  For one, the theme admin console seems updated compared to the way it looked before the crash, but in good news, everything is up and working properly and I only have minor adjustments to make to the site now.  I don't know what caused the crash but it was apparently theme related.  Let's hope it's now cleared up.  If you would like any more info to try and figure out what caused the crash, let me know!  Thanks for the help.

The downloads were recently updated with the latest version of the Vertex Upgrade Patch (http://www.shape5.com/component/option,com_docman/Itemid,96/task,cat_view/gid,308/), including a complete overhaul of the admin, so it's very possible that your problem was caused by a bug that has been fixed in the update.

Cool.  Thanks again.  You mentioned menu size... is there a limit to the number of items in a menu?  Just curious.

Not officially, but large menus have been known to have issues due to the way WP stores the menu.
