: How to work the EMusica Wordpress Template - with live learning curve and images
: Lukey September 25, 2016, 04:32:33 PM
Good Morning,

I've created an Image widget (see attached) but am having a hard time working out how to get this into my website. Do I do it as a page, post, or other please?

Thanks,
Luke

When you create a widget, it by default shows everywhere on your site.  On the demos and in the shapers, I use Widget Context (https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-context/) to allow showing or hiding widgets on a specific section of the site.  If you install the Shaper in a separate location and look at the widgets from the sample data you should be able to understand how everything is set up.

Hi Tristan,.

Thanks for the reply. I've done as you've suggested and all I'm seeing is this despite saying yes to "install sample data" (see freshstart.jpg) compared to (WhatIWasExpecting.jpg).

I thought the idea of a template was that you were able to edit a live example.

Perhaps for mutual benefit you and I could schedule a skype call / screenshare session as you totally get all of this. If I can get shown a few key elements that were displayed in the demo I (saw here (http://www.shape5.com/demo/index.php?wp/emusica)) that I can change with my images / text etc it'd be SO hugely appreciated. I have no idea how many hours I've been working at this late into the night / morning fumbling my way through it trying to work out where/what "Top Row 1.1", "Custom1", "left", "top right" are for example. I'm needing a map or guide - or the live demo data from the demo. I can reverse engineer from there I'm sure.

Is this at all possible please?

Thanks so much,
Luke

If content is missing, it's most likely that the file that installs the demo content got corrupted when you uploaded it.  The easiest way to fix it is to delete the "Sample Data Injector" plugin, then re-install it by extracting the "/wp-content/plugins/shaper_{theme_name}.php" file from the shaper, putting it into a .zip file, and using the WP plugin installer to re-install it from that new file.  Once the plugin is re-installed, activate it once to reset the site to a default shaper install; when you activate it, you'll need to make sure you wait for the page to completely finish loading before you navigate away so you don't interrupt the database dump, which would prevent the sample data from being added and cause the same problem again.

For future reference: When uploading the shaper for a new site, make sure you have your FTP client set to use "Binary Mode" for transfers; any other option can cause file corruption for PHP files, which is usually what prevents the sample data from being installed correctly.

If you need a way to tell which positions the widgets are located in, I built an indicator into the framework a long time ago that you may find useful.  You can add "?tp=3" to the end of any URL on your site and it will overlay the widget positions with their names.  For example: http://shape5.com/demo/wp/emusica/?tp=3

That's really cool, very handy to know thank you. Wish I had done sooner and in fact that aught to be in the documentation for others to use.
That indicator however hasn't tagged up the main scrolling (4) image in the centre, what controls that part please? (Attached)

That is Custom 2.  If you look, you'll see it's behind the menu, so the label actually shows above the menu to the left.

Ah the whole thing is Custom 2? Ok I think I'm getting it now. Hmmm. What bit is Custom1? The login/register bit? Because we dont need that.
Am I right in thinking Custom 2 ends where the "Sidebar Position TopRow x:x" start?

Custom 1 is unused.  The position overlay includes an outline around each position, to go with the label.  The Login and Register buttons are part of S5 Box, and are controlled by the positions with the same names.

Ok I think I'm getting it. I just hope that what I've got in my mind can be easily coded into this template.

Glad we've had this quick back + forth this afternoon (uk). I'll have another go at this tonight.

I managed to make the small boxed image scroller gallery. Is the larger 4-page image scroll under the "S5 Image Scroll V2" widget I'm guessing?

The main image fader on the demo is Image and Content Fader.  The thing that uses Image Scroll is the album art scroller at the bottom of the demo; the widget title actually indicates which one it is.

Ok, thanks for the tip. Playing with it now. Had been disabled previously....

Yay! Thanks Tristan - I made a thing! Its a bit massive so I'll play with the dimensions under the widget settings to something smaller.

I think we're almost there, you know?

I've just solved two resulting issues after I typed and snipped them up!! Ha! I had written;

Three things please that have now come up.

1) How do I make it more snug between the top menus and the images. The "withindicator.jpg" I posted previously has the pic of U2 immediately under the menu whereas mine has a fair gap (see gap-donotwant.jpg)

2) Still have this login/register box despite the widgets being empty - unless thats not correct. What have I missed here please? (emptywidgets.jpg)

3) Is item 1) here because I've used the wrong position. I dragged "S5 Image and Content Fader V3" into Top Row 1.2 and that looks ok. If I put it into "Custom1" or "Custom2" - wait a minute. Nope, thats cool actually. So Custom2 is like the big background infront of the master background , cool. No gap so thats item1 resolved.

So now I still have that login/reg box to remove please. Indicator doesn't show where it is.

Thanks

Luke

You can change the labels of those buttons at the bottom of the "General" tab of the theme options.  Removing the text should disable the buttons.

Hi,
Not seeing "General" option just yet. If I go to Appearance > Themes I get Widgets, Menu and Customise. Nothing under the latter two. Widgets I'm rooting around but nothing yet for General. I've done Ctrl+F and 1 thing has been found but theres no highlight so it must be in/under one of the many many active widgets (right hand side).

<Keeps looking>

Oooh, hang on. Under the "Shape 5 Theme" theres a General (general.jpg) yes. Making adjustments.....deleting words... success.

Cool. Brilliant in fact.

I think we're upto a really good point now. I hope this conversation helps others with this template and maybe others. That indicator, mate, you have to make more of a noise about as that was a gamechanger for me. Absolutely.

If I get anything else I'll open a new convo as this has gone waaaay off topic.

Cheers loads Tristan for your help and patience throughout this. We're all much happier here now.

Later on,

Luke

Actually one last thing (groan/ ::)) . How do I remove the copyright stamp at the bottom right please? Definitely not finding that though all the clicking around up to this point.

Thanks,
Luke

You can either place a text widget in the "Footer Credits" position with the text you want, or you can edit the footer.php file (if not in the root folder of the theme, it's in the vertex folder).  I recommend the widget method, as file edits can be accidentally overwritten if you forget to back up the file when installing the Vertex Upgrade Patch (http://www.shape5.com/component/option,com_docman/Itemid,96/task,cat_view/gid,308/).

Spot on. Added an empty text into that widget (attached) and its gone now. Fab.

I think we're all done. Go ahead an lock this badboy up!

Have a great weekend,

Luke
