I did two updates. One update was joomla 3.4.8-3.6.5 and the other was the joomla administrator component. I am not sure which update caused this, however, when I go to access the S5 Image and Content Fader v3 component, the UI flashes and then shows a drop down on the top left with a blank screen. This issue was happening with many modules unrelated to s5 as well. So a little more digging led me to clear my joomla cache which did the trick.
