I am trying to utilize the area above my inset module on the template. I was wondering if I could put text and/or images or maybe even a module in either the 'Top' Search position, the subheader_spacer2 area and/or the area at the top right where the tabs for Register and Login appear (if used).

I realize that there is likely some tweaking involved but was hoping you could point me in the right direction?

You could insert a module position in the subheader area but if you have something published to the inset position this will complicate things.  The inset position is calculated depending on the height of what you specify for that position thus it will overlap the subheader position area.  I recommend using firebug for firefox if you already don't, there is an inspect button that allows you to hover over any html entity and see what CSS is formatting it.
