is there a preferred maximum image size to use for responsive design on the traction template for the modules
also does the vertex framework resize the images automatically depending on device or is the full image downloaded

any help please

Just make sure your images aren't too large in size as this will take longer for your site to load. The image size shouldn't matter as long as you aren't forcing widths on the image coding such as width=500px. The images will auto scale to the container size in Responsive Designs.
