I am feeling extremely ignorant right now while trying to learn the new Joomla structure.  I am extremely grateful for the Shape5 support.

I installed the Corpway siteshaper at http://migration.clarioncounty.info and played around a bit.  It seemed to fit my rather simplistic needs (all my sites are local and family history non-profit research/information).

Then I used the JUpgradePro component to migrate all the data from my old site (which was working fine, but my hosting company won't allow J1.x sites for security reason -- I get that...).

Interestingly, I figured out I had duplicated a category alias, because the upgrade component stalled.  The component's debug option showed me the error.

After I did the migration, many of the site shaper features broke.

Is there something fundamental I missed about upgrading, that would be simple to fix at this point?  Should I reinstall the Site Shaper and then only tick the buttons for migrating content from the existing site?  That is, really, all I want to transfer over.

Worst case, I can create my categories and copy/paste 375 articles.

I know that, once I get the hang of this, I won't have to bother anyone with simple questions.  After all, I've been using Joomla successfully since it was Mambo.

In the mean time, I appreciate your patience.

Hello,

You wouldn't be able to use a site shaper and then apply JUpgrade to it. JUpgrade creates a brand new install of Joomla itself and copies the data into that installation. As far as I know you can't install into an existing installation (which is what the site shaper does). So you would use JUpgrade to upgrade your site to a new installation, and then you would have to manually configure the templates and extensions as they are in the site shaper. A site shaper can only be installed into a blank empty and empty folder. If you're having problems with the upgrade itself, I would suggest contacting JUpgrade's support regarding this.

Thanks.  That's what I was afraid would be the case.  The upgrade component worked okay after I figured out the categories bit.

I've got enough of a learning curve for J3, so I know I'm not ready to tackle configuring all the features of the templates.  That's why I love the site shapers!

Here's a thought -- would this work?  I could install the site shaper in one directory, then do the upgrade into another directory.  Once the content is all converted, could I do an SQL dump from the upgrade and import it into the site shaper database?

It seems if I mirrored the categories between the site shaper and the upgraded database, the content would import properly.

Has anyone tried something like that as a workaround?

Hello,

You could try this and it should be possible but SQL importing and dumping isn't something we can provide support for. In most cases (if your site isn't huge) it is much faster to install a Site Shaper and manually copy the content to the new site. This prevents things like database corruption and bloat created by 3rd party update extensions like JUpgrade.

The nice thing is you will only have to do this once as all future Joomla Updates will be through the back end.

Thanks, as always.  I wouldn't expect y'all to provide support for that.

My overall issue isn't one site -- it's several, with an aggregate of maybe 8,000 content articles that have to be converted after I get the structures established.

I considered switching to WordPress, because the learning curve is much shorter.  But, I've got a crapload of Joomla-specific code in those articles (page breaks, table-of-contents tags, etc.).  That was going to be a bigger nightmare.

Off to see what I can figure out.

(I do love the template, though, and look forward to customizing it for each of the sites.)
