The Shape 5 Tell A Friend module uses an email script to send user recommendations. This script must have certain permissions for it to run correctly. This tutorial will step you through, in a very easy way, how to make sure your module will run correctly on your server.

Explanation - Every server has a default file permission setting. A file permission setting is simply a security setting that effects the way a user can interact with the file. There are read, write and execute permissions. Each of these permissions can be assigned to groups and the groups are user, group and world. By setting the permissions you are setting up what is called CHMOD. A numbering system has been assigned to CHMOD settings, when we refer to 0644 below we are referring to the CHMOD settings.

How to install -

1. Login to the backend of Joomla 1.5 with a user that has administrative rights.
2. Next install the module.
    a. Through your main menu system navigate to extensions > install
    b. Click on Browse and then navigate to the file.
    c. Click on Upload File & Install

3. If you get a permissions error or can't find XML, etc errors.  Be sure to set your modules, tmp and cache folders to CHMOD 777 temporarily. You can do this with an FTP client.
4. If you are having trouble getting the script to work then via FTP or your file manager navigate to the modules folder and then the mod_tell a friend folder.  Make sure all the files in this folder are set to CHMOD 0644.

I am using it in legacy mode in 1.5 so it works on my template.

What I am looking for is instructions to change the permissions for the email. You have a screen shot for 1.0, not 1.5. I was just looking for a way to change permissions. Right now, when I click on the link, I get "page not found" and wonder if this is a permissions issue.

Thanks  Smiley

Hello,

You will need to change the permissions on your server for the files.  You might not have access and possibly may need to contact your host.

Hello Rick,

I just tested in IE and FF and it worked for me.  What browser and version of it are you using?

Great mod!  Is there a way to edit the email to add some styling and change some text?

Good mod. I modified to use in Seo Cart, our version of VM 1.0.13.  Thanks.  Will write up a little review on Serr.biz. Smiley

OK - I didn't read the tutorial before I installed. Can I just reinstall it (correctly) and get it to work or do I have to somehow un-install first?

Great Module. I have basic Joomla knowledge and am using 1.5 so I was a bit nervous of giving it ago. Just bit the bullet, installed it and was getting a 404 error when using it. Just logged on to my file manager, went to the modules location and chagned the permissions to 0644 as specified and it works great.

works fine except i didn't get 404 even though i didn't do any file permission changes. In other words, it works perfectly at the moment without any out of the ord installation steps...

1.5.2 Joomla...

One thing I don't like though is the fact that users can put any email on the email field, essentially spoofing~ it'll be great if they automatically used their CB details!

Hi Mike,

I am having an issue with "Tell a Friend" module on my site. I have installed the module as per guidelines shared by you. My site is not able to send the mail to intended recipient. Can you pls guide me what all should I ensure for this module to work perfectly.

URL: http://taxhouseonline.co.in

Site is building Joomla 1.0.11

My global configuration is as follows:

Mailer: PHP mail function
Mail from: [email protected]
From Name: Admin TaxHouseOnline
Sendmail Path: /usr/sbin/sendmail
SMTP Auth: No
SMTP User: <blank>
SMTP Pass: <blank>
SMTP host: localhost

Module is installed and published.

Awaiting your reply.

Thanks & Regards,
PM

I'm with you on this for sure, with 2 notes:

1. Many of us don't use CB, so I would suggest that the user info be taken from the Joomla user acct.
2. The e-mail body doesn't have a message that I can have in there, which the customer can edit.  For example, the body should have a link to my site and the home page name, and that data should not disappear when you click in the body.

Other then those 2 minor points, this is an awesome module!  Smiley

Hi Jonah,

The image of the CHMOD settings under 'how to install - point 4 '
is not displayed any more (not in Firefox and not in IE).

Could you please publish it?

Thanks and best regards,
Maaike
