Hi,

I have a website that I have created using the Shape 5 Traction Template in Joomla 3.  The site looks and functions perfectly at this time.

My client would like me to create a number of landing pages and has requested that the main toolbar/menu be removed from the top of the landing pages.

I followed some instructions on the forum and created a duplicate copy of the Traction template.  While doing this, I called my new template "landingpagetemplate".

On the support forum, I read where I need to edit a couple files including changing the "traction" name to "landingpagetemplate" on the templates/landingpagetemplate/templateDetails.xml file and also the templates/landingpagetemplate/xml/Specific.xml (I was unable to find any occurrences of "traction" on the Specific.xml file).

I created an article and added it to a new menu called "Landing Page Menu".  I set the menu item to use the new landingpagetemplate template.

I logged on to the template and set it to "Hide Menu".

Something is not working...the article is still using the original default template.  When I go to the original default template and hide the menu, it hides it from all pages PLUS the article that I do not have associated with the original template.

Finally, I made sure that on the new landingpagetemplate, I had no menu items associated with it EXCEPT the single article that I added to the Landing Page Menu.

I know I have to be close but have wasted hours trying to get it work.  Can you assist in guiding me as to where I should look next to get this working?

Thanks in advance!!
Scott

Hello,

First, templates aren't really meant for landing pages like you are mentioning, they are meant for full pages. If you just want a page that's got the menu turned off though, there's no need to create a copy of the template. Just create a second style of the template in the style manager of Joomla. Then assign that style to the landing pages, on that style under the Menu tab in Vertex turn the menu off.

Thanks for the note.  I went ahead and made a duplicate style and it worked.  BUT...and this may save someone hours of time doing what I did all day.  I had to make the duplicate template the default template style.  I don't have any idea why that would matter but the upper toolbar stayed on all pages (even the landing page that I told not to include the toolbar) if I set the default style to the original style.  I had to set the default style to the new duplicate style before it worked.  It now works by turning off/hiding the menu in the Vertex settings on the duplicate style.

I hope this helps someone!  Scott

Hi Mike,

I thought that I had this figured out but it seems that I do not.

Here is my situation, I have created a website using your Traction template.  The site looks fantastic.  My client wanted to create a set of landing pages that needed it's own set of css files etc.  I followed the posted instructions to duplicate a template.  I now have the Traction template running and also the LandingPage template running on the server.

I thought all was well until I went to modify a page on the website.  When I hit "save" it saved to the settings that I have for the LandingPage template.  On the landing page template, there is no toolbar at the top etc.

So basically,  every time I edit an article on the site, I lose the toolbar from the top.  Also, If I create a new article...it has no toolbar as well.  Here is an example of the page that I just created:  http://www.havingbabies.com/home/test-page/

Things I have checked... On the template styles in the Vertex...in the "Menus" area, I have it set to "Show" the toolbar and the toolbar to be shown is "Main Menu"

When I added the article to the menu structure, I made sure to check that it was being associated with the template that has the toolbar.

Within the template itself, I made sure that the page was associated with the menu item and assigned to the proper template.

I have no idea where to look next.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hello,

The Flex Menu and the CSS for it are not active on that page meaning it is disabled in the Template Manager. Perhaps your changes aren't being saved properly in the back end due to a permissions error with the vertex.json file on the server. Make sure that file is writable as well as try a different browser. Also double check that those menu items are linked to a style that has an enabled menu option and that there is a default active menu assigned in Vertex to that style.

Regards,

Hi Mike,

I went through and checked the items that you recommended. The permissions are set correct. I have the article http://www.havingbabies.com/gender-select/ set to use the duplicate template called "landingpage".  I have created a new menu called "landing page menu".  The gender select article above is the only article currently connected to the landing page menu.  It is set to use the landingpage template.

In the Vertex of the landingpage template, I have the show or hide the menu as "OFF".  I have "Landing Page Menu" set as the default "Main Menu".

Everything on my end looks correct but when I choose to view-source:http://www.havingbabies.com/gender-select/  It is shown as using the Traction template.  I just don't understand why it does this.  When I duplicated the template, what other files should I change/check to make sure that it is not using the Traction template but the duplicated landingpage template?

Thanks for the assistance,
Scott

Hello,

It depends whether you created a physical duplicate or a style duplicate as they do different things.

1) A style duplicate would just allow you to have 2 separate Template Manager configurations assigned to different menu items. You could then use this to change fonts on different pages or the layout of the page. You can verify your menu items are using different styles by using different font types on each style that are assigned to alternate menus.

2) A template duplicate would physically duplicate all the Template files. This would allow you to have multiple CSS files applied to each page such as different custom.css files.

See our Tutorial here:

Hi Mike,

Thank you greatly for the assistance.  I actually had all of the information correct on my site on the backend as was shown in the "How To" article.  This is why I was so confused.

In the past, we have had issues with an SEO component called SH404SEF.  It is a great component BUT can lead to headaches as well.  This morning after reading your note on to go and double check everything...I then went to the SH404SEF support forum and found a couple articles on other having the exact same issue.  In general, the issue had to do with the component creating duplicate entries using the toolbar and article ID.  I had to go into the component URL manager and delete the duplicate entries and it fixed the issue.

I don't know if this information will help others but for future reference, if you have a client who has duplicate templates (or two separate ones) running and also the SH404SEF component installed, they could see the wrong template showing up.  Have them delete the duplicate entries in the SH404SEF URL manager.

Thanks again for the help...your templates are incredible.
