i have entered a valid api key but when you add an email in front end,  it keeps saying api can't be blank

From some other threads related to this issue:

After testing everything I could possibly think to look at, I did some research - it appears that the "API Key can not be blank" error comes directly from the MailChimp API server and has nothing to do with the code in the plugin.  It seems to be a common issue with MailChimp extensions for WP, Joomla, and more.  Unfortunately, that also means that I have no way of fixing it.



I am using Jotcache and the template CSS/Javascript cache.  Could caching the page be interfering? Thanks again for your time.
Caching maybe but I think it may be related to your session. The module stores values in a php session variable. So if your browser page is left open too long or you clear your browser cache and try to submit without refreshing the page this could cause this problem.

If you load the page and try to submit right away does it work?

As I said, the error is on the MailChimp side, it has nothing to do with the S5 code.  It seems to be a random problem that only happens for a small number of users or API keys; if it was a problem for everyone, there would be a lot more posts about it. 

A quick search on Google for the error message shows that that error seems to happen for almost any MailChip widget from any vendor, so hopefully they'll fix their API sometime soon, and things will just start working the way they are supposed to.
