Hello! When a page is entered that is not found, the page title states file not found, but the page displayed is a variation of the blogs page, not the 404 page included in the theme. How do I configure the theme to use the 404 page included in the theme? Thank you! - Trey

The theme doesn't have an actual 404 page; the framework is designed to use a normal WP page as the 404 notice, as long as there is a page with the title of "404 Error Page".  You can see more details on the demo: http://shape5.com/demo/wp/game-world/pages/404-error/

Hi Tristan,

I see. Huh, the page titled '404 Error Page' that was included in the site shaper theme is still there, however it is not displayed when a page not found is entered. Any ideas? Thank you! - Trey

Did you make any changes to the content.php file of the theme?  The detection and redirect for 404 is all done at the top of that file.

Hi Tristan,

Negative: I have not made any changes to the content.php file for the theme. I added an image to the top of the 404 Error Page, but the page was not displaying prior the image add either. What do you suggest? Thank you! - Trey

Can you provide a link to your site so I can take a closer look at what's happening?

Your site seems to be having a few issues, and I'm not really sure what could be causing any of them.  I know it's a recent release, but I recommend installing the Vertex Upgrade Patch, just so you have the absolute latest code & to make sure that there are no issues with file corruption.

The easiest way to install the patch:

1. Download the patch and extract it somewhere on your computer
2. Backup the vertex/footer.php file from your theme
3. Delete the vertex folder from the theme (leave all other files alone)
4. Using an FTP client like FileZilla, upload the patch to the theme folder, overwriting all files when prompted (Be sure the FTP client is using binary mode for transfers, as anything else can cause file corruption).
5. Put the backup of the footer.php file back into the vertex folder of the theme.

That should be all that's needed to fully patch the framework portion of the theme.  Once that's done, hopefully a large portion of the issues I'm seeing on your site will be solved.

Hi Tristan,

I performed the suggested steps. The 404 page is still not displaying. Have any of the other issues you saw been resolved by the patch? What do you suggest? Thank you for your shared expertise! - Trey

Are you using an SEO plugin that provides a 404 override?  That's the only thing I can guess would be happening, everything else on your site looks like it should be working as intended.

I'm using Yoast SEO plugin free version, however I don't see any 404 override settings. Any ideas? Thank you! - Trey

I believe Yoast overrides the 404; if so, it would probably be under an "Archives" or "Special Pages" area of the settings.

Aha I see the 404 settings in the SEO plugin now - thank you Tristan! I changed  Titles & Metas\Archives\Special Pages\404 Pages in the Yoast SEO plugin to 'Page not found'.

I changed this line of code found near the beginning of the content.php file to match the SEO plugin and be a little more descriptive: <?php
   $s5_404_Page_Name = 'Page not found';

I changed the 404 page title to 'Page not found'. The desired 404 page is now displayed for pages not found in the /blog subdirectory (http://agrismartinc.com/blog/hfhfhfh).  In the /pages subdirectory and root directory there is still a variation of the blog paged displayed without the sidebar menu.

Perhaps the SEO plugin and theme were fighting for the 404 page displayed? They are both the same now.

Is there anywhere else to configure the 404 page displayed for the root directory and subdirectories other than /blog? Thank you! - Trey

Unfortunately, I don't think there's really anything more that can be done unless you can find a way to disable that part of the plugin.   You might be able to find a different plugin that lets you create a custom 404, but then you would probably want to just stop using the theme version.

Hi Tristan,

Thank you for your investigative efforts! The Page not found page title is currently displayed on a modified version of the blog page - which could be confusing to users. An SEO plugin is perhaps a necessary component of a Wordpress site. I really think this is a sharp theme and would love to be able to use an SEO plugin and still have a 404 page displayed every time a page not found is encountered. I read a possible fix according to this article would be to include a 404.php file in the theme to point the .htaccess file: http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Error_404_Page. What are your ideas on Shape5 including a 404.php file in the theme? Think it would work? Thank you for your shared expertise! - Trey
