I believe this problem resulted from a bad install of the mediaplate site shaper. What happened was in the admin (backend) all of the items on the right modules (where you see the logged in users, menu items, etc.) were fully expanded. The top (textual) menus were frozen, but the icons worked.

I decided to re-install the Mediaplate site shaper, and it worked fine. I'm assuming that it was a bad joomla install, or I had installed some conflicting modules. I did install two modules to block/delete users that either haven't logged on or gave a phoney email address.

I deleted the bad mediaplate site shaper install, and the new one is working fine.  I'm sure it was a user error and not something to do with the installer packages.

Thanks for the reply.
Walt.
