How To Duplicate Templates and Files in Joomla

In this Tutorial you will learn how to duplicate the Template Files or add a Duplicate Style via the template manager of Joomla.

In this Tutorial you will learn how to create duplicate copies of a Template in a way that generates two different sets of files on the server. This allows you to have separate CSS specific modifications on each Template that isn't possible by just duplicating the Style in the Template Manager.

Notes:

  • This Tutorial is for Joomla installations only
  • FTP or File Manager access is required
  • This Tutorial is for Intermediate - Advanced Users

Beginner Alternative

If you do not need to have separate CSS files on different pages of your site you can use the Duplicate Style feature instead. This allows you to have two separately configured Vertex Admins to use for styling and layout.

(Note that doing this means the default CSS stylesheets will be used for both styles)

1) To use this feature navigate to Extensions > Template Manager > Select Your Template Via The Radio Button > Hit Duplicate At Top
2) Assign the new style to specific Menu Items by clicking the Style and using the Menu Assignments Tab
3) Each Style will have its own unique Vertex Admin Panel that you can use for changing the layout and styling of specific pages

Step 1: Login To Joomla By Typing /administrator After the URL

Step 2: Navigate to Extensions > Template Manager > Then Select Templates From Side List

Step 3: Find Your Template In The List And Click "Templatename Details and Files"

Step 4: Click Copy Template in the Top Bar and enter a New Template Name (all lowercase)

Step 5: On the Server navigate to Templates > Template Name > TemplateDetails.XML and replace "ALL" instances of old Template name

Note: You can use the Find and Replace feature built into most editors to help you with this

Step 6: On the Server navigate to Templates > Template Name > XML > Specific.XML and replace "ALL" instances of old Template name

Note: You can use the Find and Replace feature built into most editors to help you with this

Step 7: Navigate to Extensions > Template Manager > Then Click Your Newly Created Template Duplicate

Step 8: Configure any Vertex Settings as needed to Customize your Template

Step 9: Assign your Menu Assignments for your "New Style" accordingly. Then hit Save and Close

Final Notes

With these additions you can now adjust any specific CSS files for each Template copy directly on the server via FTP or the File Manager. An example of a great time to use this would be if you wanted "rounded" buttons on one page but "squared" buttons on another.

A great place to add custom CSS edits is in the custom.css file provided with every Vertex based theme using !important to override any default styles. This ensures that none of your edits will be removed when updating the Framework in the future.
